Email 2/25/13

I should be really angry at you for even mentioning that you saw Les Mis TWICE! also that you mentioned that it was nominated for the Oscars etc. We had a deal and you broke it so that should warrant anger and bitterness but Oh no! I am a strong person who can handle deal breakers like you. Ha ha just kidding. I have heard that it was really amazing and I am glad you enjoyed it so much. I agree with your comment on talent. Our talents are made so much stronger when we give glory to our Father in Heaven. After all, He is the one who blesses us with them. It would be silly to ignore the source from witch they received their "claim to fame and glory." If only they did know what glory really was! I hope they will understand and accept it one day!

Transfers were last week and we received two new Elders into our district who are going to be absolutely amazing! Both are almost done with their missions. One (Elder Jean-Baptist, from Haiti) has 1 month left and the other (Elder Webber, from Provo UT) has 6 months left. They both have strong desires to finish strong and they working very hard to fulfill that desire.Elder Jean-Baptist actually has family in the ward. The ward and the missionaries have been trying hard to re-activate them so hopefully having their son and brother serving as a missionary here will help with that a lot. President forgot that Elder Jean-Baptist's family lived here but said that if he forgot it was for a reason and that he needed to be here to finish out his mission. Elder Jean-Baptist will actually "come home" to this ward in a month so it is really interesting. I really hope we can help his family. We've been trying so hard before he got here so again, hopefully they will come back! Elder Webber has a great story as well. Has been through a lot and we are grateful to have his strength here in Bay Shore. All four of us in our district are 23 so... mini blessing! :) jk, but really :)

The Spanish ward is going crazy with baptisms! They had three last week and two yesterday! They are all working so hard and their investigators are truly loving this gospel and happiness it brings. Yesterday's baptism was really quite special (unfortunately I don't know their names so I'm sorry for that). These new members have been "investigating" the church for 20 years, yes that's right 20. They had two or three children together and most of the members thought they were members a long time ago. They came to church every week and always served others and have strong testimonies, they were just never married or baptized. Saturday was their wedding at the church and Sunday was their baptism. The whole ward came to both and their son was able to baptize them! It was an AWESOME experience (even though I had no idea what was being said)! The spirit was so strong and the joy on their faces was so beautiful! We are so happy for them!!! I love the joy this gospel brings into the lives of those who will accept it!

Ok have a wonderful week!!

Shippa- Get better!
Chups- I hate your glasses but you are looking good!
Mom- Thanks so much for the pictures! I LOVE PICTURES :) (hint, hint) Also I am so happy you are enjoying your Ipad!
Dad- You've always been bald, that's the way we like you :) Also the calf is BEAUTIFUL!! What's her name?

Letter 2/18/13

Dear Family,
Oh what an eventful week!  I already wrote most of it in my email but it really has been so great!

We were so excited for Clarissa!  She is so strong and has the most amazing faith!  When she came out of the water she said "I feel like a completely new person!"  It is such a job to know someone like her.  She loves the Lord and shows it in everything she does.  I don't understand why she wasn't baptized years ago!

There is still so much snow everywhere!  You'd think this was Utah!  Ha ha.  It is still really cold but we have really warm clothes to wear so we don't freeze.  Also, we have been doing a lot of work on the computer in the church, so we are doing really well!

We really do have quite the amazing zone here in this part of Long Island!  The Elders are always looking out for us and making sure we are included on P-days.  (We are the only Sisters in our Zone).  They keep us well informed and really make us feel welcome.  We are so blessed.

I feel a little like mom in her last email.  I don't know what to write because I wrote it all in the email.  I hope Choops has a great B-day.  I cannot believe he is 14 already!  Ask Sister Moreno Diaz.  I'm really freaking out!  You know I have a horrible memory but I do remember when he was born and how obsessive Kale was over him!  It was cute...haha.  Oh those good old days :) !

Love,
Sister Hamblin

Letter 2/11/13

Dear Family,
My email told all about the blizzard but let me tell you more about this wonderful week!  Tuesday and Wednesday we as sisters in the mission had a Woman's Conference!  It was the first one , well official one, that this mission has had since this Mission President was called!  It was so fun!  I got to meet so many wonderful Sisters who are so amazing!  They have such wonderful testimonies and they love serving the Lord!

Tuesday when we got there, it was really about getting to know each other and to introduce the theme of the conference which was D&C 121:45 (Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly;  then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.)
President Calderwood talked to us about confidence and Pride.  He so kindly pointed out that when we say things like "I did so horribly in that lesson" or "I really can't do this" or "I feel so inadequate for such a hard and wonderful calling".  Because we are daughters of God and we are here doing His work everything we do should be done with a member of the Godhead.  How horrible it would be to say those things with we instead of I!  Suggesting Christ, the Holy Ghost or God can't teach a lesson, etc. is horrible!  President said that we need to realize that because we are doing the Lord's work He really is and can be with us all the time.  When we seek and become humble to receive a member of the Godhead in our teaching, finding, and re-activating efforts, the only thing that can stop us is the other person's agency.  But most likely they will want to act positively toward coming unto Christ.  We are so blessed to have such a wonderful Mission President.

Wednesday we heard from the traveling sisters about charity.  Oh it was so wonderful!  They gave us scenerios about when we would use charity and how when we have charity, again, we cannot fail.

Sister Calderwood talked to us about self talk and being always positive!  She is awesome!

We also had a mini self-defense class from the wife of a NYPD Officer.  She herself is a native New Yorker and has had several needs for self defense, but she admits they have all been because she was being "stupid".  It was really good and fun to hear form her and Sister Calderwood.

Well, I guess I'll close for today.  I hope you all are doing well!  I love you so much!  Thank you for your support and prayers!

Dad, Sister Moreno Diaz loves the 3 Kings/Magi and really appreciated your letter from Christmas.  Also, she would like me to inform you that they really are 3 kings, not magi...or whatever you call them.

Mom, Sister Moreno Diaz really enjoys my bear claw back scratcher...I think I am going to need another one :)

Riann, PROM?  Keep me updated!
Rad, Could you please tell me about your friends, yes all of them, I don't know any that aren't our cousins.  Thank you!

Love,
Sister Hamblin :)

Sister Hamblin's first baptism

This is Clarissa! She is so awesome! She really hates taking pictures so we are so grateful she let us take one of her! Elder Kang is in the picture with us. He is/was our District Leader and is so amazing! Such a great missionary! We are really sad to lose him and his companion Elder Crabtree!

Email 2/18/13

Dear Family,
I can not believe it is Monday again! This week has FLOWN by! I really don't know what to say here but I know soo much has happened in the past week.
Sister Moreno Diaz and I went on splits with the Traveling Sisters last week and learned a lot! We had so much fun! It was really great to be able to see how other missionaries work in the mission. I loved it! These Sisters work in the same area as some of the Elders from my district in the MTC so it was really great to be able to hear how they are doing and some of their experiences! One of the shiest in group was almost kissed by an elderly lady, apparently it was a very funny situation! I wish I had been there to witness it! We are having some of our own great experiences here in Bay Shore anyway.
Valentines day was so fun! Not only did I recieve so many wonderful packages from lots of family and friends we recieved roses from a lady in the Bay Shore ward! Missionaries are seriously so blessed to be able to serve here! We spent the day heart attacking members doors. Elders Kang and Crabtree came up with the idea and we had so much fun running away from children trying to catch us and angry neighbors mad because we parked infront of the fire hydrant. We had dinner at a members home that evening who is a cheif... need I say more? It was AMAZING!!! Luckly she is moving to Arizona next month so I can look her up when I get home!
The best part of the whole week was there were 4 baptisims in our zone yesterday! Our investigator, Clarissa, was one of them!!! She is so sweet! We are so blessed to know her! At all four baptisms there were many members from the ward supporting those who werer being baptized! The member support here is so awesome! We are SOOO BLESSED!!! Have I mentioned that yet? Well we really are! :)
A downer for the week was however that transfer calls were made... our district leader and his companion are both leaving us! :( We have become really close as a district and we are really sad to see the Elders go. One is being transfered to another area and the other is going home because of his hurt knee, he has to have surgery on it :( We will miss them but know this is the Lord's work and the new Elders, or Sisters who come in will be just as amazing! WE ARE SO BLESSED!
Love,
Sister Hamblin :)
P.S.
I know Elder Hamblin is an over achiever and already sent Raddon his birthday present but I am a slacker can only send a letter :( I have been looking everywhere for some really cool New York thing that would be awesome but really there is nothing here on the Island. I will keep my eyes open though... sorry!

Dear Mom,

What a joy this blizzard has been! We have had so much fun! Sister Moreno Diaz has never seen so much snow in her life and is just loving it! She has taken so many pictures she'll be able to make a mural on her wall! She made a snow angel in her skirt and was soaking wet afterwards! She loves it but at the same time doesn't understand why people would voluntarily live in a place where it snows like this all the time haha. She is really awesome and we are having such a fun time together!

Friday we were told that we couldn't drive past four because that was when it was supposed to start snowing really bad so we went home and studied and did some cleaning and organizing to get things ready for the Traveling Sisters (they are like zone leaders... just they are girls and don't hold the Priesthood) who are coming tonight. Saturday was when it stopped snowing (we got over a foot of it) so we studied and planned and then walked to nearby members homes and delivered cookies and checked on them to make sure they were doing alright. Sunday our sacrament meeting was canceled so Elder Crabtree and Elder Kang let us shovel snow with them! This was my favorite activity of the weekend! We met so many wonderful people who really didn't have any help.

We met this couple who were in their 70's shoveling their driveway so we stopped to help. They told us that they haven't seen it snow like this in 20 years and back then they had all their children living at home. They were so grateful for the free help and were glad to see that there were "nice kids like you all around these days" :) They were so awesome.

The next lady that we met really helped me understand why I am here. We pulled up and saw this lady in her late 60's early 70's shoveling snow all by herself. When we asked if we could help she was really kind of hard and grouchy towards us. She said that she didn't need any help and that her son was coming with a truck to help her move all of her snow. We said that we would just help until her son got there and then we would move on. She they said that she didn't have any money could we please just go away. We told her that our labor was free and that we were missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we understood that we wouldn't be very Christ-like if we knocked on doors when people really needed help moving snow. This sweet lady broke down in tears and told us that she really didn't have a son coming to help her. She lived alone and her friend down the street had died the night before. She was really struggling and she was so grateful that someone was looking out for her upstairs. She kept saying "God bless you, you truly are a God send."

We helped some other people literally find their cars beneath all the snow and dig them out and helped some other people dig their driveways out so they could go to work this morning but really that lady touched my heart. I will always remember her. When times get hard and when I think I am not doing any good here, I will remember Milly. She may never join the church, but she will have come closer to God because she saw His love for her through us that day. That is why I am here, to help others see God's love for them, and hopefully through that they will want o know how to "come unto him."

We are so blessed to be here in Bay Shore! Thank you all for your prayers and support! Also thank you for the picture of Rex! I can't read his blog and he doesn't really tell me anything so updates are awesome! I am so grateful to have such and amazing example as him! I am soooo blessed to have such an amazing family! I love you all!

Love,
Sister Hamblin :)

P.S.
Could I have both grandpa's addresses please? Also I REALLY need Katie Christ's address! I am staying so warm and it is because of her!

P.P.S
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

Email from President Calderwood

Dear Parents and Loved Ones of our Missionaries,

I'm sure you are quite anxious as our part of the world is again the bullseye for a big storm. Please know that we are aware of all the dangers of the storm and are in contact with each missionary through the mission organization. Yesterday President Calderwood advised all missionaries to obtain adequate food and batteries to last several days in case there is a power outage and for those missionaries with cars to fill their tanks. We've asked each missionary companionship to use their best judgment and guidance from the Holy Ghost to FIRST be safe and THEN look for ways to serve.

These are exceptional young people and as you know, are "battle tested." We anticipate that there will be no major problems. Thank you for your prayers and your support. It is our privilege to serve with these outstanding missionaries.

With our warmest regards,President and Sister Calderwood

Dear Family,
OK so this is going to have to be really short and my letters aren't that long either. Sorry! Please know that I love you all and hope you are doing as well as I am and better!
This week was another testimony building one! Our wonderful investigator who we love so much has stopped drinking tea. Let me tell you a story...

Tuesday we taught her the Word of Wisdom. We hadn't even finished introducing the basics of it when she asked if tea was part of the Word of Wisdom. She explained that because of her many jobs and her weird work schedules she only gets three hours of sleep each night and she uses tea to stay awake. She has to drive long distances in some cases and is very afraid of falling asleep at the wheel. Sister Moreno Diaz and I were a little concerned as we explained and promised that the Lord would ask her to do nothing that she couldn't Handel and that he would provide a way for her to over come this addiction. As soon as we finished she said, "I will not drink tea ever again starting right now." I cried of course and Sister Moreno Diaz was so excited! There was a member of the ward with us who testified that over coming addictions is hard but that it is so possible when we seek the Lords help (we would be lost without members in our lessons!). After the lesson our investigator said the closing prayer and begged the Lords help in this challenge.

The next day we got a text from her telling us that she had stayed in bed all day because of a severe headache. Her headache was so bad that she was sick to her stomach! Poor lady! We asked her if she would like to have a Priesthood blessing and she gratefully agreed. Sister Moreno Diaz and I fasted for her the next day and when we went to teach her and have the Elders give her a blessing she told us that her headache was a little better but that she was so happy to be getting a blessing. We left her that day feeling so grateful that we were able to teach such a wonderful, faithful lady. The next day we got a text from her telling us that her headache was almost gone! She said that she knew that she could do anything through the Lord and his Priesthood power!

I guess the point in telling you all this is that 1. This lady is such an example to me and everyone she meets and 2. When we truly have faith and hope that the Lord will do as he promised, we can do anything.

I am so blessed to be here in Bay Shore! The members are amazing, the people are amazing, and the sunsets almost match Arizona's :)
Have a wonderful week! I love you all so much!... jk about this being short :)
Love,
Sister Hamblin:)
P.S.
I still don't have stamps so if you don't get any letters this week.... I'm really sorry I forgot to pick them up when we were at the store... :(

Letter 1/28/13

Dear Family,
This has been such a great week! The people here in the Bay shore area are so awesome. Sister Moreno Diaz and I are still trying to get to know the area and the ward, but overall everything is going so great!

We went to the ocean! We literally only live two minutes away from the water but there are so many buildings and people in between us and the water I would have never known how close we are. It was beautiful, but cold, but beautiful. We only stopped there for a minute because we had an appointment but it was so awesome. Poor Sister Moreno Diaz had to put up with me going on and on about it all week. She is a saint! I am so blessed to have her as my trainer.

I don't get letters as often as I think you send them because it takes a while for the office to get them to us so if I am not answering questions, that's why.

You would be so proud of me! I call people all the time, I talk to random people on the street and I am slowly starting to do it all on my own. Poor Sister Moreno Diaz has to push, push, push to get me to do anything but slowly and surely I am doing better.

I am so proud of you for talking in church! I bet you did better than dad mom! He just gets more attention because he is bald, people feel bad for bald people.

Ok, I better go. I love you!

Love, Sister Hamblin
