Dear Family,
I really don't have much to say in this weekly report. We had interviews with President Calderwood and seriously we are so lucky to have him as our president! I learn so much from him every time we have meetings with him. He is truly inspired.
We as a district are trying to think of lots of things to get the community around the church comming to church. We have some ideas and really hope to see more but this week we played volleyball and no one showed up. So we are going to try again with a more involved activity that would be fun for familys and kids. If you have any ideas please feel free to send them our way!
I can't believe that it is alreay MAY! This means that Elder Hamblin has been out for 8 months and I have been out for 4! I can't believe how fast the time has gone! I really feel like I have so much to do and no time to do it in. It's a good thing there are so many missionaries doing the same thing, who will come in after me and do great things, better things and keep this wonderful work moving forward.
Well, onward and ever. I love you all so much! Thank you for your prayers and you letters!
Love Sister Hamblin :)

Letter 4/22/13
Dear Family,
What a wonderful week we've had! We were SO busy! I really don't remember most of it because we were running around like crazy trying to get everything done. We had a trainers/trainee meeting on Tuesday and then had sister exchanges on Tuesday night to Wednesday. Manhattan on Friday and on Saturday and Sunday we were trying to find people.
Sister McKee is amazing. She keeps me on track. She is such a great example to me! She has already helped so many people and she still has such a number of people who need and love her. Seriously she has become such a great friend and I love her so much!
Our district is so amazing. We have so much fun together. We are going to Graffiti Park with them today in Long Island City. They are great and are doing great things for the ward. I love them all!
Ok, I'd better go. I have TONS of letters to write today. I love you so much!!!
Love,
Sister Hamblin

Dear Family,
What at great week we have had here in Bay Shore! With so many crazy things happening around the country we are so blessed to be be living in a place that is quiet and safe. The members of our ward keep us quite informed about what is going on around the country and the world so we won't be surprised someone talks about what is going on here and there. So we are quite blessed. We had sisters exchanges this week and I was able to work in Terryville this week with another brand new missionary. I can't tell you how amazing these missionaries are! Their excitement for the work is astonishing and so encouraging! These missionaries know their stuff and know how to listen to and follow the spirit! What a blessing! I am so happy to hear that so many missionaries from our stake are out/going out! That is so cool! They will add so much to this awesome army fighting for God and His righteous purposes. I know this battle is won by small and simple means, but this force coming out is large and mighty! We are so blessed to be in this part of history!
I am pleased to inform you that I was able to go to Manhattan AGAIN!! I am the luckiest missionary in the NY-NYCS mission! This was my fourth visit and I'm telling you, it's AWESOME! You all are going to love it there! I don't know why I never wanted to go there! Silly me :) I will try to send pictures this week in my letter home... I just need to relocate the second SD card :) it is somewhere in the apartment i'm sure :).
I can't thank you enough for all your support and letters! Sister Golbranson, the sister who takes care of the mail, says that I am the luckiest missionary because of all the mail I get, so thank you all for being so great! I love you all! I'm sorry my letters back are a little slow. I am running out of time on P-Days but I am working on it and hope to be able to catch up this week.
Today we are going to the Brooklyn/Queens area to a place called Graffiti park. I hear it is really quite cool and I can't wait to send Sister Gardner some of those pictures!
Thanks again for all you do for me! I LOVE YOU ALL!
Love Sister Hamblin :)

Letter 4/15/13
Dear Family,
Another great week here in Bay Shore New York! Sometimes it still freaks me out that I am actually in the state of New York! I had NEVER wanted to come to New York for any reason and yet, here I am serving the Lord in this beautiful place! Who would've ever thought?!
Holy Cow! I love it here so much! Sister McKee is such a wonderful companion, missionary and friend! She is so Great!!! Her attitude about the little stuff is like Raddon's, she never lets small things get her down, in fact she doesn't let anything get her down! She is so positive and happy all the time and it's contagious! I LOVE it!
Elder Webber and Elder Clark are in our district and making the work fun as well. Both have good attitudes about being missionaries and both are excited about doing activities to draw in the community.
This work is so awesome! I hope everyone gets the chance to see someone's life change so much and see their own progress through that other person...does that make sense? Think about it.
Well, I have 9 letters I need to write today. Sorry I'm so short!
I love you all!
Love,
Sister Hamblin :)

Dear Family,
I am so glad to hear that everything is going so well for you there! I am also so proud to be part of our family. I can't tell you how often I have to explain to people that there really are happy families in the world and there really are happy marriages! Some of these people have literally NEVER seen a REAL happy marriage.I feel so sorry for them and reassure them that there are plenty in world and that they really can have a happy marriage through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for always making the gospel the center of our home.
The Bay Shore ward got a new Relief Society Presidency this week! Sister Urban (who called you why I was at there house), Sister Rathgaber (the Bishop's wife) and Sister Mercado (who I always talke about anyway). I can't tell you how lucky this ward is to have these wemon in as thier Relief Society leaders! They truly love each of thier sisters and take care of them. I love this gospel because of that fact! We take care of eachother and it is never a horrible experience because we have the right attitude. We know why we are taking care of eachother and why we should even care about those around us. We are truly blessed to know that our Heavenly Father works through us to bless the lives of others!
Sorry this email is so short. We have a zone activity today near the beach! I love warm weather!
I love you all! Have a great week!!!
Love Sister Hamblin :)

Letter From President Calderwood
Dear Sister Hamblin,
You are invited to be a trainer for one of the new missionaries who have arrived in the mission field. I have given careful and prayerful consideration to those we might assign to this very important responsibility. I have sought and received the wise counsel of my assistants in this important responsibility. In the vast majority of cases, those invited to train remained in their current area so they would not have the added challenge of learning a new area while also training a new missionary.
I invite you to give specific, focused attention to the following:
1. Please follow the 12-week Infield Training for new missionaries, prepared for helping new missionaries start off their mission with hard work and confidence.
2. Please diligently follow the schedule each day so that your companion feels the blessing and strength that comes from consistent study, finding efforts, teaching lessons, working with progressing investigators and with members, daily planning sessions and obtaining adequate rest.
3. Invite your companion to share in the responsibilities of the work so that his or her confidence grows from participation and not just observation.
4. The new missionary you are training should be able to train at the end of the 12 weeks.
Thank you again for your willing acceptance of this vital responsibility. There is no more important assignment we make in our mission. God bless you and your companion.
Warmly,
Kevin E. Calderwood
Mission President

Letter 4/08/13
Dear Family,
What a crazy week we've had here in Bay Shore. Monday was filled with visits to members and recent converts and investigators whom Sister Diaz taught throughout the mission. By the end of Monday I was so tired I didn't think I would be able to function properly the next day. Poor Sister Moreno Diaz was freaking out all night thinking about what home was going to be like. I hear, however, that she is doing very well adjusting to this new stage in her life.
Tuesday it was my turn to freak out. I couldn't eat breakfast or sit still through my studies because I was so nervous about getting a new companion and having to train. My nerves were through the roof as I walked into the church and into the primary room where I would find out who my new friend would be. The trainers were all sitting in a semi circle facing the front of the room where missionary after missionary filed through the door. As we all looked at each other wondering who would be with whom the tension ran high in the room. President Calderwood took his time explaining the different roles that we each had in strengthening each other and doing the work in our different areas. He told us to beware of pride, from both the trainer and the trainee. He told us to love each other and treat each other with respect. Finally he started with the sisters in announcing who would be serving the furthest out. Luckily that left me 3rd on the list to find out who I would be training. As he asked me to step forward I just about threw up, but tried to smile nicely so as not to freak my new companion out too much.
Finally, President said Sister Hamblin will be training...Sister McKee. Sister McKee stepped forward and I knew immediately I had worried for nothing. This girl was so sweet looking, not a trace of fear on her face only excitement and readiness for the work. I am extremely blessed!
Sister McKee is from Bear Lake, UTAH. She actually lives in Lake Town, but she says it's so small that she just tells everyone she is from Bear Lake. She is the 2nd youngest of 5. She has three older brothers and 1 younger adopted sister (who she loves SO much!) She is 19! She has a beautiful testimony and truly loves the people, even though she hasn't met most of them yet. Seriously, she is so amazing. Her #1 goal is obedience, 9something that was talked a lot about in conference)...and she wants people to understant the doctrine as much as they can. She came on a mission for the same reason I did so I feel that we were meant for each other and for Bay Shore.
We have had a crazy 5 days and honestly I don't remember most of it. From super awesome revelation to dinner with members who love us, we have been soo blessed.
Thank you so much for your faithful prayers.
I love you so much!
Love,
Sister Hamblin

Dear Family,
Oh conference was so good! We are extremely blessed to be living in a day where even though we are hundreds of miles away we are able to see the prophet speak to us, in real time. We are so blessed to be able to learn from these inspired men and women who speak for the Lord. What a blessing! Among many Sister Dalton's talk was a favorite. Her cry for a return to Virtue caused the hearts of one of our "kind-of" investigators to turn a little more towards the light and truth.
This week has been all around great! With the exception of having to say goodbye to Sister Moreno Diaz, that was sad. She is a great missionary and will continue to bless my life forever. However, my new companion is super amazing too! Her name is Sister McKee and she is from Bear Lake Utah. She is 19 and she is just so sweet! She came out for the same reason I did and she is so excited about the work! She loves everyone I tell her about. We haven't been able to meet with very many people yet but she already really truly loves them.
This morning we were able to go to the most eastern part of Long Island, called Mauntauk, and watch the sun rise! It was seriously one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. It was almost too cloudy to see it happen, and we had to use the light from the light house to find our way there, but as it rose and the waves were crashing, it was so peaceful and calming. The ocean is so beautiful at 6 in the morning! The elders we were with made the experience so much better because of their great humor and their excitement over leaving Bay Shore at 3 in the morning to be able to see it rise on time. I am really so lucky to be serving with such great boys. Anyone wanting to visit Long Island needs to go to Mauntauk and watch the sun rise. It is a must.
Mom, I think your idea to start an English class at the church is a great idea! If you need any help, "Ask the Missionaries, They Can Help You" (Elder Nelson). There are a lot of people in New York who have gone to free English classes, Spanish classes, and so on, at the church who have later investigated the church and become members. You are so inspired! I am learning more and more that there are so many ways for us to share the gospel with our friends and neighbors. God really does care for each of His children and if he has to show it through an English class so be it.
I love you all so much! Thank you again, really, thank you, for your prayers and letters. You are so great!
Love,
Sister Hamblin :)
P.S.
Just so everyone knows, the church has authorized missionaries to email all friends and family members as long as they don't live in our specific missions... just thought everyone would like to know :)

Letter 4/01/13
Dear Family,
I cannot express my gratitude for all of the prayers that have been given in my behalf. This week I have felt the power of them so strongly and I can't, again, tell you how grateful I am for them. with Sister Moreno Diaz going home, my own home sickness, and the call to train a new missionary, I knew that I should be completely overwhelmed and stressed out. I have had moments when I felt those things, but, Heavenly Father has blessed me with a wonderful family and friends whose prayers were answered in the time of greatest need. How can I ever re-pay you all for your kindness to me? I believe I have already shared this next story, but again, it hsa touched me and really given me a new outlook on prayer.
Two weeks, 3 Sundays ago, a sister, the same one who called the house while I was there, said "I love it when people say 'Sorry Sister Urban, all I can do for you is pray'. All you can do for me is call down the powers of heaven for me? I'll take it any day! I have always known that prayers are powerful, but for someone to KNOW, that was really inspirational and really life changing for me. How crazy for me to be able to see that, even though I have grown up in the gospel. I still have so much more to learn.
Those are my simple thoughts for today. I love you all! You are my strength!
Love,
Sister Hamblin :)
P.S. Riann, please forgive me for that April Fools joke. It wasn't nice of me at all. I love you!

Dear Family,
I know that I have been sending emils and letters telling you how fun this has been. But really it has been soooo hard. There are so many things going on here and I really don't think I can train. I had an interview with President Calderwood last night and we decided that the best thing for me to do right now is come home. I really can't tell you how hard it is for me to say that but, I really can't take the stresses of a mission any more! I really love New York and I hope that I can come back one day, but I just can't handel it any more. Please don't be dissappointed in me. I tried as hard as I could. I guess I'm just not strong enough.
My plane will arrive in Pheonix at 12:45 tomorrow evening. If you could arragne for someone to pick me up I would really appreciate it.
I'm so sorry,
Mandy

Dear Family,
This week was really fun. We spent most of the week visiting members and letting Sister Moreno Diaz say her good bye's poor thing can't decide if she is happy or sad about going home. She just keeps saying, "I don't know what to feel!" She will do great things at home. She won't even have time to miss the mission when she gets home because of all the things she "has" to do. Between school, work, and helping her mom, I don't think she will be able to see stright! She really is amazing!
This week those of us who will be training this next transfer had a meeting with President Calderwood and his assistance who really put the pressure on us to be obedient and to do the best we could to help these new missionaries progress as far as we can help them to. I walked away from that meeting feeling overwhelmed and even more nervous than before but, prayers from family and friends work and I have been so strengthend! I can't thank you all enough! I am so blessed!
I live in an apartment building where another set of missionaries live. The misson just rented another apartment to another set of missionaries. The missionaries who live in the apartment already will be spliting and all three of us still living in the apartment will be training! It is so crazy! The mission is changing so much and we are reciving so many blessings! I just can't wait to see what more is in store for us!
I realy don't know what else happened this week except for I had the most amazing Easter! Our sacrament meeting was so amazing! AMAZING talks, AMAZING songs and the spirit was SOOO strong! The members here are just so great! WE ARE SOOO BLESSED!
LOVE,
Sister Hamblin :)

Letter 3/25/13
Dear Family,
It was so good to be able to visit with you through email today! I am so blessed to be able to live in such a time of instant messaging and such!
I promised in this ltter to let you know how the rest of the conference went. President Hardman (stake president) spoke on being tolerant. President Calderwood spoke on the Atonement and the Doctrine of Christ, and Elder Olsen (Area 70's) talked about Holy Week and getting ready for Easter. It was really great! During this talk I thought about preparing for the Sacrament and how well I do/don't do this. I came to realize that preparing for the Sacrament is just as important as preparing a convert for baptism. It is really important and greatly needed. Oh we are so blessed!
Manhattan was awesome! I didn't realize that the beautiful temple is right across the street from Juliard School of Music! Those buildings are so cool!
However I didn't get many pictures because, well I'm graceful, and I fell down and landed on my camera, so it's broken :) I will just use those disposable cameras or something in the future. Sister Moreno Diaz took some pictures on her camera so when she sends those I will send them through email. I'm so sorry!
Okay I'd better go. Sorry my letters are so short today. I love you!
